West is Still Booming

The number of building permits issued across the country slumped 7.8% in December,
but the downturn may have been just a blip at the end of a record year for new home
construction intentions.

An increase in non-residential construction overall pushed permits to a record high for the 11th straight year in 2006, thanks in no small part to continued soaring demand for residential and non-residential space in Western Canada.

Percentage change in the value of all building permits for 2006:
Canada +9%
Vancouver +17%
Victoria +8.3%
Abbotsford +15.9%
Calgary +39.8%
Edmonton +22.9%
Winnipeg +31.2%
Toronto -3.7%
Montreal +2.6%
Halifax +20%
